The staff reassured us that they put the strict minimum amount, just barely enough to help the children get used to it and develop their palates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, in France, when we taste something hot, he comments on how delicious it is, pointing out that \u00ab\u00a0they put a lot of harissa\u00a0\u00bb. Seemingly aware that an <a><\/a>appreciation for piquant flavours is something only certain adults and virtually no children possess here, his taste for spicy food has become a source of pride, something that he underscores in setting himself apart and defining his unique tastes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought of this today as I read Farah Abdessamad&rsquo;s piece \u00ab\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/opinion\/exile-and-life-harissa-encompasses-tunisian-heritage?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0e8DDdoI02nhl1GFPkcka9mG_nnlflyz4K4wA2lheN2W0dmnZwzS8F68w_aem_q5qbAe025EKaTsI3rC5Tpw\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/opinion\/exile-and-life-harissa-encompasses-tunisian-heritage?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0e8DDdoI02nhl1GFPkcka9mG_nnlflyz4K4wA2lheN2W0dmnZwzS8F68w_aem_q5qbAe025EKaTsI3rC5Tpw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exile and life: Harissa encompasses Tunisian heritage<\/a>\u00ab\u00a0. Raised in France, her impression that her grandparents&rsquo; couscous was too spicy signalled to the family that she was becoming \u00ab\u00a0too French\u00a0\u00bb. Nevertheless, they were happy to instead make her a \u00ab\u00a0white couscous\u00a0\u00bb (the word \u00ab\u00a0white\u00a0\u00bb refers to the absence of red chilies, but also &#8211; unintentionally but penetratingly &#8211; captures its colonio-racial boundary-making significance).
